See you in the Spring: Juno nominees Dizzy to play Oshawa in April

Will McGuirk February 3, 2019

By Will McGuirk

Juno nominees Dizzy, have had a head spinning ride since signing to Royal Mountain Records in 2015 and releasing their debut album ‘Baby Teeth’ last year. It has been a giddy giddy-up for Katie Munshaw and the Spencer brothers, Alex, Charlie and Mackenzie, taking them in a matter of months from their north Oshawa basement rehearsals to the international festival circuit and now two nominations in the 2019 Junos. It also means they have been busy touring Canada, the USA and Europe and away from playing any sort of homecoming gig for quite a while. But Munshaw has told me Dizzy will be home in the Spring, playing the Oshawa Music Hall Tuesday Apr 23 as part of their tour with fellow Juno nominees, Tokyo Police Club.

TPC are also named in the same Juno Alternative Album of the Year category as Dizzy but Munshaw isn’t thinking of awards or competitors as of yet. She is more just in awe of the opportunity to play with one of her fave bands she says.

“I've loved Tokyo Police Club before Dizzy existed,” she says. “To be nominated alongside them and to be going on tour with them through Ontario in April is a lot for me to wrap my head around. It gives you the sort of feeling of ‘How did we trick everyone into thinking we belong up there with people that we've looked up to for years?’”

Two nominations however indicates this is no trick; Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, as the all-knowing They say. Munshaw’s modesty may be honest but it is misplaced. The band have been gaining critical acclaim since the Royal Mountain record deal. Britain’s NME gave the ‘Baby Teeth’ record 3/5 Stars and they have been building fans the old-fashioned way, playing their indie aired bed-sit blues tunes live. Performing at Britain’s Great Escape fest, billed as Europe’s festival for new music, helps.

As well as the Alternative Album nod they have been nominated in the Breakthrough Album of the Year category. The awards will be handed out March 16 and 17 in London, ON. with Canadian superstar and founder of the all-female line-up Lilith Fair Sarah McLachlan hosting. For a young woman such as Munshaw working in the music business, McLachlan’s trail blazing career has been an inspiration.

“I think Sarah McLachlan is a huge part of any Canadian music lovers family. Her songs were played at every wedding, graduation, funeral I’ve ever been to,” says Munshaw. “I remember seeing her at a show in Toronto in 2003. I would have been 8 or 9 at the time. Getting to see a woman on stage slamming on the piano and singing words that came straight from her own brain- and not a group full of male writers- it flips a light switch in your head. Seeing that kind of representation confirms to the writer and to the listener that girls can write and perform their own stories and people will listen.”

Folks are clearly listening to Katie Munshaw and her band of brothers and one can expect we will continue to hear more and more from Dizzy. And fingers crossed they will have some hardware to share with their hometown fans come April.

Dizzy shoot nostalgia-tinged video for 'Bleachers' in Oshawa

Will McGuirk January 16, 2019

By Will McGuirk

Oshawa band Dizzy have released the video for “Bleachers”, the latest single from their album, ‘Baby Teeth.’ According to a Facebook post by lead vocalist Katie Munshaw, “Bleachers” is about her own fears for her younger sister, Beth and the world she is growing up into. The video was directed by Ryan Faist and features Super 8 footage shot by Faist and Beth Munshaw.

We asked Katie what were the fears she had for her little sisr?

She says the track was initially written just before Beth began high school.

“My main worries were wanting to shelter her from all the bad experiences that come along with a life change like that,” Katie says, “Although, when we were brainstorming about the video we wanted to think about bigger picture concerns as well. Political future, social media and how it affects a person who has grown up with it, and the big one that we tried to convey at the end of the video, climate change.”

Baby Teeth is available on Royal Mountain Records.

The Standstills release video for 'Wild'

Will McGuirk July 3, 2018

By Will McGuirk

The Standstills make rock with spirit. Spiritually is deep at their core and they have followed that path to one of the scared sites of rock 'n roll, Joshua Tree National Park, for the video for their latest single, "Wild" from their upcoming album 'Badlands'. The director is Jeff Scheven of Black Fawn Films.
Guitarist Jonathan Fox says the idea for the location came from drummer Renee Couture and says intriguingly they are working on a novel which will explain the video and its connection to The Pyramid Code.
WHUT? as the kids also say. The video is trailer for a book?
Well I can't get my head around that without help. Maybe the answer as some of the kids say is in the desert.

Jerry Leger on his European tour; plays Town Brewery in Whitby Jun 7

Will McGuirk June 3, 2018

By Will McGuirk

Its been a while since Jerry Leger has played in Durham Region but he makes a welcome return Jun 7 2018 at the Town Brewery in Whitby. The Toronto singer/songwriter, considered one of the best in the country by many (including me), has recently returned from a tour of Europe with his band, The Situation. They played The Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland and England. There is a lot of European folk traditions in Leger's songbook so we asked him how it went on this, his first visit to the mythical source.

SC: Much of what would inform your music would come from the British Isles and Ireland - how has visiting the wellspring of folk affected your own songwriting?

JL: "Yeah, music from there has always been a part of my make up, so it's always had an affect on my writing. It was wild to finally be there and I could almost hear music bouncing off of the land, water, streets and pubs."

SC: Have you had a chance to see other musicians in the towns you have toured? Any of the locals impressed you?

JL: "Not really, we played 21 or 22 shows in 25 days, so there wasn't a lot of downtime. We did see some jazz played by some local students in Copenhagen. That was cool and Kyle (Sullivan), the drummer in The Situation sat in for a tune. Other than that we got to hear some cool musicians who opened for us. I dug Matt McGinn who opened for us in Belfast and a great guy too. The Situation and I roamed the streets of Cologne, drinking beers with the band that opened for us there, B. Phonics."

SC: There were places in Ireland and England I visited where I felt very grounded, has that happened to you, has the land spoken to you?

JL: "I wish I could have spent more time in some these places, we were on the move a lot but I felt very comfortable in Winchester, England. We played this old tavern dating back to the 1500's, filled with ghosts, a great bartender and a great crowd. I enjoyed hanging out there and walking around the block a bit. Outside of Manchester, James McKie's Dad lives there and drove us around to see a lot of the surrounding villages and beautiful scenery. I just wanted to stay there. Belfast we had a day off, so that was nice getting to hang out there. Overall I really enjoyed meeting people and always felt welcomed and comfortable. Looking forward to going back"

BEAMS will teach you how to love, they play the Moustache Club Apr 5

Will McGuirk April 4, 2018

BEAMS are playing the Moustache Club Thursday Apr 5. Annie Sumi is opening. BEAMS have a new album, Teach Me To Love.

By Will McGuirk

Berlin baby, it has the pull, the pull of the nightlife - Cabaret and Kraftwerk, Bowie, Reed, Iggy and Peaches, It’s a Feistian bargain BEAMS has struck, the capital of cool imbues the Toronto band’s latest album, ‘Teach Me to Love’ but there is an accessibility, dare one say pop, to the avant-folk ramblings of Anna Mernieks, brothers Keith and David Hamilton, Heather Mazhar, Mike Duffield, Craig Moffatt and Martin Crawford.

The album marches in with simple sturdy strident sounds, mix up Kraftwerk’s “Computer Love” and Neil Young’s “Computer Age” and then play lead on a banjo or conversely just listen to the first three tracks. BEAMS play synth-pop who knew with nary a synthesizer in sight, I’m looking at you “Live In The Real World”.

“Pull of the Night” has Martha & The Muffins “like a loaf of bread in the oven you look good to me” baked in - could be the accent.

The journey through the anything goes world of Berlin the Myth continues on “I Notice Every One”  which flutters on every one from Dave Brubeck to Focus to the Beatles.

As the album progresses it moves into more prog-folk territory, with the music becoming a subtle cradle for the voices of Mernieks and Mazhar, sonics ease, less stilted Kraftwerk more the wash of Tangerine Dream, albeit covering “Heroes”, as though nothing could fall.

Ultimately its the harmonies which hold up BEAMS and with such a strong core the band can play around with the walls, whether them walls be from Berlin or no.

No videos yet for the new album but here’s some oldies but goodies.

Let's make an annual Oshawa Music Week something to talk about

Will McGuirk March 31, 2018

By Will McGuirk

‘Been thinking ‘bout Oshawa’s music scene lately. We’re steady. Not moving forward, but not moving backward. There are bands rising, Crown Lands and Dizzy are doing well. Daniel Caesar is doing phenomenally well, and on his own terms. Clubs are steady.

Steady is not a bad platform to build on.

The Oshawa Music Week (formerly the Rock ‘n Reel festival) put together by the students at Durham College Music Business Management program is something to build on this steady platform of a scene. The OMW runs Thursday Apr 5 through to Apr 12 2018. As well as showcases and conferences this year the students are adding an award show. Awards to honour Industry Leader, Lifetime Achievement, Best Artist or Band, Best Emerging Artist and Best Live Venue will be given out Saturday Apr 7. I am hosting by the way.

L-R: Artemis, Darren Smith, Jacob Hamayda are nominated for Industry Leader

The awards are interesting to me, in particular the emerging and the lifetime ones; the future and the past. These awards are a way to encourage young musicians and they are also a way to look at those who have created the paths we walk on.

Future nominations in the lifetime achievements could be singer/songwriter Shirley Eikhard, Mike Star of Star Records and the Star Club, Wilson and Lee, Kerri King of the Moon Room, Craig Laskey of Collective Concerts, Nigel Best, manager of now Canadian Hall of Famers, the Barenaked Ladies, Steve Kane of Warner Music Canada, yours truly (lets not be falsely modest). There are years of work yet to be honoured.

Matlock Expressway are nominated for Best Artist or Band 2018

If there is an annual awards show, whether run by the students or spun off with DC as the main sponsor, there would need to be infrastructure around which the show operates. There would need to be publicists, promoters, venues, bands, ongoing engagement with the music community at large, perhaps an affiliation with an annual festival, perhaps an opportunity to sponsor a student via a bursary, perhaps a collaboration with the City of Oshawa event planners.

These roles, paid roles, could be filled by students graduating from the MBM program, providing them the opportunity to work here in the Region. Their presence becomes part of a network which encompasses past builders, the lifetime achievers, and new enterprises, bands, artists, new grads, and so much more. The network grows, grows stronger and becomes another platform, another layer, on which to build.

The awards show would need a venue, perhaps the Regent Theatre. There would be a need for rehearsal spaces, perhaps an office. A building housing both could be found, should be in the Entertainment District, as King Street in downtown Oshawa is informally known.

The awards would attract visitors, I would hazard a guess an appearance by Caesar would bring in a few bums on seats, sell a few dinners and lock up a few hotel rooms downtown.

This is all possible now the awards have been launched. These 2018 are the beginning of something. But again it will depend on how these first ones go, how well attended, how well received by the community, both inside and outside of the music community, but in particular the politicians, the economic developers, chamber of commerce chairs and those in the downtown BIA, venue owners and media.

If you can see the potential in this initiative by these students then I encourage you to attend. Mention my name and I will get you a good seat. If you cannot attend then like, share, retweet and follow the OMW on your social media accounts. Either way get engaged and lets give them something to talk about.

Will McGuirk March 23, 2018

First moves, first steps, first flutters, "pretty girls on the stairs with their hopes up', - that cusp, not wanting to go over, not wanting to not, slipping the hand of Holden Caulfield and making a beeline for the edge thats Dizzy territory. "Pretty Thing" is the new release from the Oshawa dreamers, its availble on Royal Mountain Records.

Celebrate St. Pats day in Downtown Oshawa with wild local music

Will McGuirk March 17, 2018

Oshawa digs deep into its own scene to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. If overpriced green beer, squeaky reels and sad songs about the old sod are not your bag step away from the bar and get to the clubs for some sounds of the city, Shwarock style.

Its been a while since the Standstills have rocked this town. They are in tonight for a hometown gig at the Oshawa Music Hall. They have a new single out at the end of the month. The next gen Crown Lands are also on the bill. Don't be fooled by each act only having two members - this is going to be loud.

We suggest you get to the Moustache Club early as the bad lads in Tijuana Jesus are quite likely to drink all of the beer tonight. Its a full bill with four acts; Fish Head Phil, Bad Waitress and Thrash Eater are also in the house. There will be a selection of local breweries onsite too so this one goes deep deep in to the culture of the D-Rock.

There's a somewhat softer twanginess to the tunes from GT Harris and the Gunslingers who are playing at the Atria. There's a fiddle so if you are going to seek out fiddle music tonight then this is where you want to be. They shall be joined by Terry Savage and the Wonky Honkys so there's that.

All venues are within walking distance of each, staggering if late in the evening. Enjoy and don't do stupid.
