Slowcity Open Mic with Sam Jr., Simon and the Island, Hayden Thorpe, Bazooka Joe 204, Caroline Marie Brooks, Sam Weber, and Astral Swans

Will McGuirk October 14, 2021

“Jump the fence, break the window, be a weirdo. Fuck the masses. Question what you’re taught.” - Sam Jr.

“What I do in a professional capacity exempts me from the responsibilities that other people my age are beholden to, in some ways I feel very free, but in other ways I feel very lonely watching other peoples' lives unfold, like I’m stuck in the same place." - Sam Weber

“It’s essentially about a broke, young weirdo singing to their partner about wanting to move away together to someplace where they won’t feel so strange.” - Matthew Swann, Astral Swans

“My brother and I grew up watching Wes Anderson movies. They were a huge part of our childhood and adolescence, and I feel like they've seeped into our DNA at this point — the colours, the outfits, the humour.” - Charlotte Cornfield

“I was feeling inspired by studies into the potential healing properties of psilocybin mushrooms in psychotherapy. I signed up to a flagship programme in the Netherlands as I wanted to explore consciousness in a safe way.” - Hayden Thorpe

“I listen to this album now and it’s emotional. I could sit there and tweak it forever, but there’s a point where it’s like building a house of cards. Yeah, I could add an extra tower on top, but it might collapse. I’ve always doubted myself, and I still do, but this album makes me think, ‘Hey, you’re doing all right, kid. You just need to keep going.’” - Billy Strings

Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Charlotte Cornfield, Cots, summersets, KeAloha, Halluci Nation, Bigmcenroe, Mauvey, Hayden Thorpe, and Babyshades

“I wanted to express the joy of seeing people, of those little interactions that happen throughout the day that I missed so much in the last year and a half. When I wrote this song I was spending so much time walking alone through my neighbourhood, and I wanted the video to take place on the same streetscape but be the antidote to that solitude. To me the city is so much about the people in it.” - Charlotte Cornfield

“Human bodies are like celestial ones; just as a planet’s course is carved out in relation to others, our course - where we go and what we do - is compelled by forces of attraction.” - Steph Yates, Cots

“So much of our existence is an inconceivable wonder yet we’re so distracted that we rarely register the immenseness of the moment. Right there, beside us all along, is the wonder of everything.” - Hayden Thorpe

Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Hayden Thorpe, Jacques Green, Richard Dawson and Evangeline Gentle

Will McGuirk September 12, 2019

By Will McGuirk

The night symphony in full voice in the garden which earlier played host to monarchs idling their way south, holding on to another hour dancing in the sun, like me holding on to another hour outside, reluctant to leave this still night and the companionship of the Harvest moon.
