Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Terry Uyarak with Riit, Ryan O'Shaughnessy, Dawes, Rich Aucoin, Tyler Ramsey, Kadeema, Butcher Brown, Low Float, and Color Fields

Will McGuirk September 19, 2020

By Will McGuirk

Nunavut artist Terry Uyarak has released the latest single from his upcoming album, ‘Nunarjua Isulinginniani (Before the World Ends)” due Friday Oct 20, 2020. The new track “Anuri” features Polaris Prize nominee Riit and is accompanied by a video directed by Chris Mills, no stranger to us at slowcity.ca. The song was written by the late Simon Uyarasuk and is dedicated to him.

“The land is our source and our being. The land has always been our trouble and our freedom. The land has been my ancestor’s stories and have become my story.” - Terry Uyarak

Dawes take on mental health and survival in their new song “Didn’t Fix Me”. Their new album ‘Good Luck with Whatever’ drops Friday Oct 2 2020 on Rounder Records.

“I'm sure we all know plenty of miserable people who seem to have it all and plenty of blissful people that seem to have close to nothing. This song is about the efforts one makes to find some easy fix, unable to recognize that it will never work that way, that we are in the end our own responsibility." - Taylor Goldsmith, Dawes

Rich Aucoin shouts out iconic music videos from such illuminaries as Prince, Nirvana, MC Hammer, Queen and more, in the fun and subtle new video for “Walls.” Aucoin’s album ‘United States’ out now, is a concise, creative and considerate response to a very complex situation in the country south of us, a response with heart and beats.

“. . . this song is appealing to not make the divisions amongst our groups be so hard cut off for membership and to keep lines of communication and compassion open to enable more and more to join the team.” - Rich Aucoin

Sticks and stones will break your bones but names can never hurt you but names, memes, avatars, icons, stereotypes do hurt. Cursory summaries, quick glances, are the building blocks of our entertainment economy. If you want to be known wear the same clothes. Every song has a hook, every act has a look. Avoid that rush to judgement, speed kills, slow down and learn up. We look too much and listen too little. Stop overlooking.

“I believe that our deepest connections are found through vulnerability which is why I feel compelled to sing this track completely unaccompanied.” - Evangeline Gentle

Niki Black · American Spirits - Niki Black

“Can I still connect with my America Spirits as the daughter of an Iranian immigrant mother? This song is an answer to that. Yes, I can and I will. But, this will come with a lot of uncovering and opposition against the unjust reality of what America has mean since its bloody conception and its chaotic, violent reality today.” -Niki Black

Aislinn Logan · What Everybody's After

“It’s about those moments when you’ve felt like you’re truly on the same plane as those around you.” - Tristan Armstrong, The Actual Goners

Waves of karma lap the edges of the gilded palaces. Gate keepers shovel heaps of broken promises trying to stem the tide, trying to buy some time but the palaces crumble still from within.

“We are now living in a different world than we were when I wrote these songs and captured these sonic vibrations, these soul vibrations. It has been a challenging year, yet all around me I see people stepping into their power, finding their voices, and discovering their strength.” - Rachel Beck

“This song is about feeling the weight of someone else’s sadness and feeling it, inevitably, bring you down too because when you love someone, sometimes you wear their emotions like your own.”  - Liza Anne

Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Margo Price, Sarah Jarosz, Aslan, Lamblion, Rushton Kelly, Zaac Pick, and Scarlet Pleasure

Will McGuirk June 10, 2020

Really enjoying this latest album from Sarah Jarosz, ”World on the Ground”; there’s a touch of Harry Chapin, a touch of Gordon Lightfoot and a touch of Neko Case and at a time when touch is rare thats a whole lot of goodness right there. The good is the details as the kids say.

“I’ve seen the streets set ablaze, the sky set on fire. I’ve been manic, heartbroken for the world, heartbroken for the country, heartbroken from being heartbroken again and again.” -Margo Price

“Making this record definitely taught me that I don’t want to be selfish: I want to channel something larger than myself and give myself to the process as fully as possible, because these songs also become the story of whoever hears them. Whatever someone might get out of listening to this record and hearing me express myself in this way, it’s completely theirs.” - Rushton Kelly

The Early Morning Rain and Sundown are on my mind - there you don’t have to read my mind now - I’ve been humming Gord Lightfoot’s hymn of the airliner of late, “because I miss my loved ones so” and somehow think I may never see them again - so I say don’t take it all for granted - take this as a sign - we miss touch and the wheels and wings which bring us closer.

“Hear the mighty engines roar - see the silver bird on high/ She's away and (eastward) bound - far above the clouds she'll fly/There the morning rain don't fall and the sun always shines /She'll be flying over my home in about (five) hours time.”

and the Sundown ?- no not that, this. . .

“What did I say
Where’s your head
No one is immune “ - Jon Stancer, Chase The Moon

“Fuck it… even if we could make the video we want to make right now, this is probably the video we should be making.” - Nation of Language

“We, after all, as if nature set out to remind us, currently face an unanimous threat, unilateral and ubiquitous, and would do well to emerge from this aware of both our impact on others and the impact that others have on us.” - Luke De-Sciscio
