Slowcity.ca Open Mic: She & Him, Amythyst Kiah, Valerie June, Mauvey, Will Stewart, Chemical Club, Andrea Nixon, and Mimi O’Bonsawin

Will McGuirk July 1, 2022

By Will McGuirk

“‘Hitchin' a Ride ‘is one of those songs that I loved to head-bang to when I was alone in my room, but I never really gave much thought to what Billie Joe Armstrong was actually singing about. I ended up revisiting it for this project, and when I read the lyrics while listening, I was really blown away to realize that it's a song about a person struggling with addiction.” - Amythyst Kiah

"If you’ve ever found yourself in a completely different place then a friend or partner, CURFEW is for you. Being on different timelines can be the best thing to happen to a relationship. It’s only the worst timing if you don’t do anything about it. “ - Mauvey

“One side striving for positive change and habits in your life, the other pulling you down into things that have short term reward but will leave you worse off. Learning how to care for yourself through actions and habits. Sorting through which impulses are beneficial and which are not." - Chemical Club

“‘Earthquake’ is the transformative tale of a woman scorned. Written by a team that spans the continents and collaborated through Covid, I believe this song has a powerful story to tell and packs a pretty hefty musical punch.” - Andrea Nixon

“I was raised by incredible women and continue to learn from them. They have had a hand in making me who I am and I am always inspired by them. Their strength drives me.” - Mimi O’Bonsawin

CMW Spotlight: Mauvey at Dakota Taven Sat Jun 11 2022

Will McGuirk June 10, 2022

By Will McGuirk

Riding on the purple reign of his latest single ‘The King” Vancity-based trap-hop artist Mauvey will feature at the Paquin Showcase Saturday at the Dakota Tavern.

Mauvey has a global reach and influence in his tracks, being born in Ghana, but growing up in Britain, and now based in Vancouver. There are tinges of high-life, hiphop, EDM, a Tyler The Creator alt-popness, with a subtle but intense anger along the lines of the grime rapper Bob Vylan. His ‘The Florist’ mixtape dropped in 2021 is available for a listen below the visualizer for ‘The King’.

“Maybe this is the heart of wisdom; knowing when to indulge and knowing when to abstain." - Jordan Klassen

“However you realize maybe love isn’t about being realistic and the past isn't foreshadowing the present either. You got to dive in or you’re lying to yourself.” - Edwin Raphael

“Love, at the end of the day, is real and unpredictable.” - Mauvey

Will McGuirk September 15, 2021

By Will McGuirk

"This song is about stepping out of the silence and coming together to use our voices for change. There is power in numbers and in song and in carrying each other.” - Andrea Ramolo

“In ‘On the Beach’ we float through the ‘wild motion’ of this new frontier, affirming that we can ‘separate the water from the waves’ before looking up one last time “as the constellations drift apart and lose their shape” to say that we ‘would do it all again’” - Jasper Sloan Yip

“Many people have experienced the challenges of staying together despite being apart, and this is my own story of feeling that pull and hoping that a relationship would survive.” - Riley McCluskey, Conditioner

“Endless thanks to director Linda Mai Green and her fantastic team for giving me the opportunity to physically do what I have been trying to figuratively get at for so long: destroy artifice and defense and false altars, tear away shame and guilt strip by strip, and to be light and free enough to join my life and love, already in progress.” - Thao
