Country music star Aaron Goodvin plays the Bond|St Event Centre Thursday Feb 13 2025. Goodvin has recorded with Meghan Patrick, our own country music star so obviously we had to know more.
Slowcity: Meghan Patrick is from Bowmanville near Oshawa where you are playing. We are always interested in her work. How did the collaboration with Meghan come about and will any more happen?
Aaron Goodvin: “Meghan and I have been writing songs for a while. I kinda had a feeling that she would sound really great on “You Ain’t” and when we started looking for a female to sing that with me I played her the song she was all in. She loved it.”
SC: I'm really curious what spurred a young kid to enter a singing contest at the age of twelve. What was the story around that; did you have a teacher, did you do it all by yourself - takes a lot of courage I think so wondering about that really big moment in your career.
AG: “Because I got a karaoke machine for Christmas when I was 12, my mom knew that I loved singing. As a way to keep me out of trouble my mom was always looking for things that I could do that wasn’t playing hockey. I instantly felt kind of at home on stage and loved sharing the music with the fans.”
SC: Wondering about your songwriting process. Country is in one way so traditional and yet surrounded by all the new tech and studio toys. How do you know when you have strayed outside the country boundaries when writing, or do you care? What is Country to you in these times?
AG: “I typically sound pretty country when I sing anything so no matter how pop it gets around it I seem to have a pretty country vocal. Which I feel like is the only thing you need these days to make something sound country. Country music will always be the storytelling and talking about things that are hard to talk about. That’s what Country music is to me.”
