I wonder how they do it, hang on until years from now another discovers the work, lying there in a bin, or back of a library or in a box in a storage locker, or perhaps on an old hard drive in the back of a drawer, and then Eureka! Shared gleefully at the discovery - Christopher Columbus like one would imagine… Its a marvellous place I am in where I get the gems, they sail across my stream, they are intimate to me, but one can only do what one can and I can only urge you to listen and marvel. The Weather Station, there with Sarah Harmer and Kathleen Edwards in my canon. . . if you need some door propped open. Open, you will not be disappointed, there has never been any disappointment from the Weather Station, there has only been song after song, soul after soul edifying moment, album after album of change-ups and growth and journey and a hand held out to journey along and no disappointments only soul after soul edifying moments evermore.

“Trying to capture something of the slipping feeling I think we all feel, the feeling of dread, even in beautiful moments, even when you’re a little drunk on a sea cliff watching the sun go down while seabirds fly around you; that slipping feeling is still there, that feeling of dread, of knowing that everything you see is in peril,” says Lindeman. “I feel like I spend half my life working on trying to stay positive. My whole generation does.”

Once upon a time there was a man named Handsome Ned who stepped onto the stage of the Cameron House and I wasn’t there. However records had been invented. I imagine Ned would have been happy to have Scott MacKay open for him or even open for. Or perhaps one could hear in Scott MacKay Orville Peck if he didn’t go for Baroque.

“Press Gang” is about the shifting role in the dissemination of information and ideas, and how the prevailing narrative that the “Death of Print Media” has contributed to a “post-truth” world.

“We wanted to be somewhere else for a spell and it was granted by whiskey, reverb and 6 beautiful, dark tunes from the early 70s. We boarded his silver spaceship looking for respite from the pandemic…”

Artist, architect, engineer, creative director, artistic director, industrial designer, fashion designer, musician, DJ, and philanthropist, Virgil Abloh, can very much be described as a multi-hyphenate man. For Abloh, who is also the Chief Creative Director and founder of Off-White™️ and Men’s Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton, music has always run deep.

“Writing songs for me is a way to uncover my underlying feelings about something –putting elusive emotions into tangible sentences, and coming to terms with them. My only guideline for writing these songs was to try to be as honest with myself as possible, and follow my instincts without all the self-inflicted barriers that I usually let get in the way.” – Devan

Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Kate Boothman, Jack De Keyzer, Matt Berninger, Austra, Sylvan Esso, Rhye, the Blue Stones, Figure Walking, Flara K,

Will McGuirk September 11, 2020

By Will McGuirk

Kate Boothman, has released her latest single, the brightly breezy “My Next Mistake”. May be just what one needs to hear on this morning, scratch that, it is what you need to hear. Up and at them folks, up and at them.

Blues guru Jack De Keyzer has a new album dropping Sept 15, 2020. "Titled “Tribute” this is Jack’s twelfth album and features twelve original tracks. The first single “Lets Do It” is now available with video by Steven Frank.

Matt Berninger of The National will release his debut sole album, ‘Serpentine Prison’ on Oct 16 2020. The album will be on Book records/ Concord records. The first singe is “One More Second.” There’s a beauty tippy-tapp organ break provided by the legendary Booker T Jones, who also is the album producer.

“I wrote “One More Second” with Matt Sheehy (Lost Lander, EL VY) with the intention for it to be a kind of answer to Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, or sort of the other side of that conversation. I just wanted to write one of those classic, simple, desperate love songs that sound great in your car”. - Matt Berninger

Austra’s new album ‘ HiRUDiN’ is now out and available on Pink Fizz records. A remix for the track “Risk It” has been released. And its a banger!!

“India Jordan recently put out one of my favourite records in a while (complete with a very on point Tipping The Velvet reference) so I was very honoured they agreed to do this remix. The new track is sunny and euphoric and everything I dreamed it would be!” - Katie Stelmanis (Austra)

Electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso have released “Frequency”, the third single from their new album, ‘Free Love’, coming out September 25, 2020, on Loma Vista Recordings. The song is accompanied by a new video directed and styled by Moses Sumney.

“We had a fantastic and rewarding time collaborating with our friend and fellow North Carolinian, Moses Sumney, on building a visual world for Frequency. He had such a beautiful vision for the project, one that ran parallel to the song's initial source in a way that showed us new spaces it could inhabit. It's a beautiful exploration of being together and apart at the same time – we feel it rings clearly in this moment.” - Sylvan Esso

Slowcity.ca Open Mic - Here comes the rain again plus Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Esperanza Spalding, Jenn Grant, Tamino, Rhye, Rich Aucoin, Black Mountain and Ada Lea,

Will McGuirk May 13, 2019

By Will McGuirk

So I’m leaving this here because it runs parallel to the way we think here at Slowcity.ca. Its from the Snotty Nose Rez Kids’ press release; “Boujee Natives stems from our belief that everyone is an artist in one way shape or form and that we were all created to create but it’s up to us as individuals to find out what that is for ourselves. We wanted to showcase all the badass First Nations artists that have welcomed us into their worlds as we were coming into ourselves and developing our artistry into what it is today. We are the creators, we are inspired natives, not native inspired, and we like to rock our shit, we dem Boujee Natives.”

So yes its up to us, you, me, to find our creative selves within and build our own future. Music helps so here is today’s open mic which you can air while you woodshed ideas this rainy week. Dig into Esperanza Spalding, Jenn Grant, Tamino, Rhye, Rich Aucoin, Black Mountain and Ada Lea. Dig into the future, unearth yourself.

Slowcity Open Mic - 'Was that the sun edition?' - with Leela Gilday, Ponytails, Del Barber, Old Man Luedecke, Operators and Rhye

Will McGuirk May 6, 2019

It just takes one sunny sunny day to dispel all the winter grumpiness, doesn’t it. So here we are at that wonderful time between frost and flies. Take advantage and get outside as you much as you can.

Its been some time, five years, since Leela Gilday issued an album but her new album, ‘North Star Calling’ is coming out this year and the single “K’eintah Natse Ju” has just been released.

In a press release Gilday says the track is “about the legacy of colonization and its impact on our (Indigenous) family relationships- part of what happened in residential school was the dismantling of the Indigenous family structure. This was intentional- if you take away children from their families you deprive them of the love and cultural traditional values that growing up in a loving home gives to them. This song is about some of those relationships. Part of this was inspired by the tragic deaths of Colton Boushie and Tina Fontaine." Leela will be at Hugh’s Room in Toronto May 10.

Also on the mic today we have Ponytails, Del Barber, Old Man Luedecke, Operators and Rhye.

Juno nominee, Rhye, releases 'Live at Massey Hall' film

Will McGuirk March 5, 2019

While Massey Hall may be shuttered for renovations the Old Lady of Shuter Street is still a presence on the scene. For some years indie artists have been given the stage for a series of short films, “Live at Massey Hall”, which have already featured Timber Timbre, The Constantines, Jennifer Castle and The Weather Station among others.

Toronto singer/songwriter and Juno nominee Rhye had been invited to perform last March and that performance has been released. His album “Blood” available on Last Gang has been nominated for Alternative Album of the Year and Album Artwork of the Year.

Junos are been handed out March 17 in London ON but the film is available now.
